It happened again!

There has never been a year in Colorado where it hasn't snowed while the flowers were blooming... And this year is no exception, so it happened late last week when a fresh (thankfully not heavy) snow covered the area and the flowers that were already blooming...

 

It wasn't that bad, really, but it snowed for two nights and each time it was about half an inch deep... The first batch mostly melted on Friday, but by Saturday morning the ground was covered again ;(

Luckily, we had a lot of the delicate flowers not blooming yet, so no irises, not even daffodils... But the tulips... the tulips at the Botanic Garden were already starting to open, and they took a beating... I'm sure most of them won't survive... but... on the other hand... most of them were just getting ready, so we still have a good chance of seeing colorful tulips in full bloom soon.

In the morning, when I entered the Botanic Garden, the snow was still falling... it kept falling and stopping while I was there, and I had this crazy feeling that I was in some kind of fairy tale - it was freezing cold, snowflakes were swirling in the air, and I was surrounded by blooming flowers :)

Wild guess - pasque flowers will survive. They look tough enough to withstand the weather...

Seeing flowers in the snow was painful, but also beautiful. And the most stunning were the patches of small violet-blue flowers, just carpeting a thin layer of snow. It was hard to walk by without stopping and admiring this pale rug of flowers :)

But I still had a great time there (if you forget about the cold). As sad as it was, it was still amazing... All those flowers... all those colors...

Usually I get tired after a couple of hours in the Botanic Garden... but the last two times I found myself wired up with what I saw and stayed longer than usual. Especially this time, when there were even fewer people (what else would you expect from such a cold morning?).

Finally I decided to go and headed towards the exit, still stopping every few steps to take a picture or two... It was not very easy to leave these flowers blooming in the snow...

As I mentioned above, this year it wasn't really bad... I still remember a couple of snowfalls in May that ruined the delicate irises and killed the cherry blossoms (click here - Snow in May).
