Day of roses

The storm that had broken so many trees was in the past (click here to see - After the storm) and the sun was working very hard to get the snow melted, disintegrated, evaporated... The roads and trails were clear, so we decided that the best way to spend a Sunday morning would be a walk in some beautiful place... And one of the most beautiful places we know is the City Park ;) It is magnificent in spring with flowering trees, beautiful in summer with its green leaves, stunning in fall with these leaves in yellow and red, a bit dull in winter with faded colors and cold... but today it promised a pleasant walk and some vibrant colors in a nice contrast with the white snow. And we weren't disappointed at all... despite the snow, everything was still breathing fall...

We walked slowly, enjoying the chilly morning air and the warm Colorado sun. I think it's impossible to explain what it's like... I guess it's that special Colorado feeling - that contrast between cold and warm at the same time...

We enjoyed this walk, and actually, we had another reason to be here. A bit of an unexpected reason, I think, because we were here to look at the roses.

Roses in November, you may ask? But... yes! We were first struck by this many years ago in October. It was a really cold weekend (I mean it... it was freezing COLD and WINDY) and we spent at least an hour wandering between the endless rose bushes and admiring the different varieties of this beautiful flower. I remember that when back in the car, my fingers were completely numb and it took a while to make them work.  Click here to see how it looked like that day - Spring in October.

But before we got to the rose patches, we met this doggy ;) It seemed like she was peeking out of a snow cave :) Nice bench in the park, huh?

And literally a minute later we were there, and... the roses were still blooming! They had survived the snowstorm, and although many of them were wilted, most looked completely untouched by the adventures of the day before...

So we were there, walking ankle-deep in snow, looking at the roses. Can you believe it? I still can't :)

There are two big rose patches down from the Museum of Nature and Science, and each was like big green island in the ocean of white snow... green islands sparkling with flower blooms of different colors.

Later we decided to continue and complete a circle around the big lake and walked towards it.

Flaming oak. What else can you call this tree?

The day was windless and walking along the water line we saw everything twice - the bottom half was almost as clear as the top, but just upside down...

We were there for only an hour, but the weather changed. When we came it was chilly, but the sun was warm and soft. Now it was really hot and we needed to get rid of at least half of our clothes ;) The snow was literally evaporating, and I believe if we had stayed a couple more hours, we would have seen that half of the snow was gone.

We strolled around the lake and returned to the car, ready for lunch. It was a really beautiful day in the City Park!
