We left friendly Montrose (click here for a tour of downtown Montrose -

and hit the road. But before we reach our
next destination, let's make a turn and see a place we missed on this
trip - South Rim of the Black Canyon of Gunnison ;) We probably need to time travel, but
who cares, huh?
We fell in love with Black Canyon the first time we first saw it back in 2011 and try to stop by even for at least a few
minutes every time when we are in the area.
Black Canyon of Gunnison is neither the
deepest nor the longest, but the unique combination of things makes it unusual and impressive. The canyon is over 2,000 feet
deep and only just over 1,000 feet wide at its narrowest point. And the walls
are almost vertical. And the stones are dark and rough. All of the above distinguishes it from any other canyon.
And, believe it or not, the dragons still live there ;)
Staying on the edge and
looking down, you feel dizzy... and looking up, you can see a smile of
a person waving his hand at you from the other side of the canyon... An
incredible feeling. I don't know which one is more impressive - the
Black Canyon or
the Grand Canyon. I'm not trying to compare them, they're so different,
but they're both amazing...
And these dark rocks
with lighter veins crossing them everywhere (by the way, these lighter
veins were formed from about 500,000,000 rock and older than one can imagine) -
can you see the dragons? There are a few of them embedded into the wall
:)
Oh my... I could easily spend a week there just staying and watching
the rocks, and listening to the river roaring deep below my feet...
